Michael Weir
Michael did not have the advantage of a mentor or to be able to attend an art
school but he had a natural gift, the gift to sculpt and this he has pursued over the last
thirty years, studying the great sculptured works of Bernini and Michaelangelo and has
dedicated his life in the pursuance of these great masters.
While still at school Michael had a brush with destiny in the taking up of a job in a Bronze
Foundry. Part of his work was to remodel and repair the wax sculptures in preparatory to
the casting in Bronze. It was during this time that his remarkable gift for the three
dimensional, realism art of sculpture became apparent and it was inevitable it would
take over his life. At the age of nineteen Michael started down the loney road to
becoming a professional sculptor.
A very prolific sculptor, Michael has created a vast collection of sculptures known as the
'Michael Weir Collection' consisting of portraiture, sportsmen, figurative, animals and
commissions for private collector's and a life-size 'Public Works Commission' sculpture
for the Hauraki District Council, of Waihi, New Zealand.
A virtuoso in his own right, and possible entrepreneur Michael's natural
talent for
realism and the sheer beauty of his creations has established
him among the elite
Sculptors' in New Zealand today.
